I’d like to talk for a moment about beer. As one of my favorite things in the entire Universe, beer has tended to take over my Facebook and Twitter feeds as brands become more compelled to share via social platforms. Enter Newcastle Brown Ale. Newcastle, in my humble opinion, might be the most engaging, well run brand Page on Facebook. Just take a look at the above photo. They’re not only promoting their new Bombshell Blonde Pale Ale seasonal brew, but also inviting us to identify with their #NoBollocks tagline by stating the obvious, making this post not only something we laugh hysterically at, but SHARE. (This photo has over 300!) As we can see A LOT on social media, most major brands tend to bombard us with information (they post ALL. THE. TIME.) in their social platforms in an effort to convince us their product is the awesomest. Take Stella Artois for instance. Above you’ll also see their HIGHLY placed “Pouring Ritual” graphic. This has alienated some Stella drinkers that just want to drink their damn beer. Not to say it hasn’t attracted more customers, but when it comes to most beer drinkers, we’re probably not going to stick around that long to drink ONE beer. Hence the brilliance of the #NoBollocks campaign. JUST. BRILLIANT.
Even to those who have never sipped the magical brew that is Newcastle, just reading their Facebook posts can lighten your opinion of brand advertising on social media, and probably get you thinking about ordering one the next time you belly up to the bar. Their real-world, no hassle approach to promotions has really impressed me and I recommend ALL brands take a page from them on social marketing. Be real with your audience, make us laugh, leave your posts open for conversation and WHAM… you have a follower base that’s not only interacting with your page but will probably be more inclined to give you their money.
So I say ‘BRAVO!’ to Newcastle today. My favorite beer, and now my favorite brand page on Facebook. #NoBollocks.
